Independent Medical Evaluations provide a thorough,
objective evaluation of specific condition(s) related to the worker's injury
or illness. Impairment ratings are often a part of this evaluation, but
can be accomplished separately as well.
An independent medical evaluation is an evaluation performed by a doctor
who is neither treating the examinee nor an employee of whomever requested
the IME (insurance company, third party administrator, attorney,
governmental agency, or employer). The purpose of the independent
medical evaluation is to provide a thorough, objective evaluation of the
specific condition(s) related to the individuals work related injury or illness that is
in question, as well as prior or subsequent conditions that may affect it,
and to answer whatever questions the requesting party has.
The IME is not a comprehensive medical evaluation. It does not
provide advice or treatment to the examinee or substitute for evaluation or
treatment by the individuals regular treating doctor. No
patient/physician relationship is established.
A written report is prepared that summarizes the evaluation and answers
any questions posed by the requesting party.
What kinds of questions does an IME address?
IMEs are conducted to determine causation of current symptoms and
treatment, diagnosis, prognosis, appropriateness of care, return to work,
work restrictions, maximum medical improvement, impairment, and further
treatment recommendations.
